The two witnesses of Revelation 11

The two mysterious guys are the two witnesses John sees in vision when in Patmos. They make their entrance in Revelation 11:1-14. Who are they? Simply two normal guys who receive an order to prophesy in the spirit of Moses and Elijah. First John refers to them as being commanded, “in the day of the Lord”, to measure the sanctuary of the temple, the altar and those worshipping. Then the angel announces that the courtyard of God’s temple will be trampled on by the nations for 42 months. During that period, Jesus, who is the angel of the tenth chapter of Revelation, will give the two witnesses the authority to prophesy.

Striking the earth with many plagues

“They are the two olive trees and the two lampstands who stand before the Lord of the earth. Both are able to devour their enemies with a fire that flows out of their mouths. Also, they have power over the sky and waters and are able to strike the earth with all sort of plague.” Revelation 11:4

The beast will conquer them

After their testimony, the wild beast overcomes them and kills them. For 3 and a half days, the people of the earth celebrate the two witnesses’ death and will not permit a proper burial. After this time, they will recover the spirit of life. Immediately, a great earthquake will occur killing 7000 men and destroying a tenth of the city.

“When they have finished their witnessing, the wild beast that ascends out of the abyss will wage war with them and conquer them and kill them.  And their corpses will be on the main street of the great city that is in a spiritual sense called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was also executed on the stake.” Revelation 11:13

The two olive trees

Revelation 11 has many references with the book of the prophet Zechariah. He wrote: “Then the angel said to me: “What do you see?” So I said: “I see, and look! a lampstand entirely of gold, with a bowl on top of it. There are seven lamps on it, yes, seven, and the lamps, which are at the top of it, have seven pipes.  And next to it are two olive trees, one on the right of the bowl and one on the left.” Zechariah 4:2-3

The Lord of the whole earth

“Then I asked him: “What is the meaning of these two olive trees on the right and on the left of the lampstand?” I asked him a second time: “What is the meaning of the two bunches of twigs of the olive trees that are pouring out the golden liquid through the two golden tubes?” So he asked me: “Do you not know what these things mean?” I replied: “No, my lord.” He said: “These are the two anointed ones who are standing alongside the Lord of the whole earth.” Zechariah 4:2,11-14

In this context, what does the earth mean? The earth is not ruled by the Lord. According to 1John 5:19 all the world is in the power of the wicked one. So the earth mentioned is not the world but all the congregations of the earth. Over them, the Lord is the supreme ruler. The earth coming to help the woman arrayed in the sun and with the moon at her feet is the same earth referred in Zechariah. (Revelation 12:16)This means all the congregations spread all over the earth.

Bringing out the top stone

What are the two witnesses charged to do? The two olives of Zechariah are Jeshua and Zerubbabel, the High Priest and the First governor of the repatriated Jews. After the liberation from Babylonian exile, they lead a Jewish remnant back to Jerusalem and Judah.

“This is the word of Jehovah to Zerubbabel: ‘“Not by a military force, nor by power, but by my spirit,” says Jehovah of armies. Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel, you will become a level land. And he will bring out the top stone amid shouts of: “How wonderful! How wonderful!”

Shouting in applause

Zerubbabel has to bring out the top stone [Hebrew hā-’e-ḇen hā-rō-šāh]? What is that? Job 38:6 has an answer:   “Where were you when I founded the earth? Tell me, if you think you understand. Who set its measurements, in case you know, Or who stretched a measuring line across it? Into what were its pedestals sunk, Or who laid its cornerstone [Hebrew ’e-ḇen pin-nā-ṯāh], When the morning stars joyfully cried out together, And all the sons of God began shouting in applause?”

The task of the two modern witnesses is this, to bring out the truth about the earth’s creation. The situation narrated in Job and Zechariah have the same ending: shouts of applause.

Of course, the corner top was first referring to the rebuilding of the temple which is a prefiguring of the reestablishing of the biblical truth concerning the earth.

A curse over the face of all the earth

Are there more details to analyze? You can find the answer in the book of  Zechariah 5:2-3.

“He asked me: “What do you see?”I replied: “I see a flying scroll, which is 20 cubits long and 10 cubits wide.”Then he said to me: “This is the curse that is going out over the face of all the earth, because everyone who steals, as written on its one side, has gone unpunished; and everyone who makes a sworn oath, as written on its other side, has gone unpunished. ‘I have sent it out,’ declares Jehovah of armies, ‘and it will enter into the house of the thief and into the house of the one who makes a false oath in my name, and it will remain inside that house and consume it and its timbers and its stones.’” Zechariah 5:2-3

Zechariah is representing the reason why the two witnesses have to prophesy. There’s a curse going out over the face of all the earth. Which curse? It’s something similar to the context of Revelation 13:15-18 about the wild beast ascending from the earth and having a well-known number, 666.

Two wild beasts

In Revelation there are two different wild beasts, one is ascending out of the sea and is the emanation of power, its ideal origin (the Dragon, Satan, as represented by Rah and the worship of the sun). The other is ascending out of the earth and is the effective exercise of power during all human history. The rulers and the subjects altogether.

“[The wild beast ascending from the earth] misleads those who dwell on the earth, because of the signs that it was permitted to perform in the sight of the wild beast [the one ascending from the sea] while it tells those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the wild beast [the one ascending from the sea]  that had the sword-stroke and yet revived.  And it was permitted to give breath to the image of the wild beast so that the image of the wild beast should both speak and cause to be killed all those who refuse to worship the image of the wild beast.”

All people under compulsion

“It puts under compulsion all people—the small and the great, the rich and the poor, the free and the slaves—that these should be marked on their right hand or on their forehead, and that nobody can buy or sell except a person having the mark, the name of the wild beast or the number of its name.  This is where it calls for wisdom: Let the one who has insight calculate the number of the wild beast, for it is a man’s number, and its number is 666.”

The image of the wild beast: what is it? Since 666 is the number of the sun the image of the beast is heliocentrism, the pseudo-scientific belief that the sun is in the center of our universe.  All those disagreeing with the establishment pay penalty. The epha container

The idea is that the earth is not properly a globe spinning in the space. This is emerging in the prophecy of Zechariah, according to these words:

“Then the angel who was speaking with me came forward and said to me: “Look up, please, and see what is going out.” So I asked: “What is it?” He replied: “This is the ephah container that is going out.” He continued: “This is their appearance in all the earth.”  And I saw that the round lid of lead was lifted up, and there was a woman sitting inside the container.  So he said: “This is Wickedness.”

Then he threw her back into the ephah container, after which he thrust the lead weight over its mouth.  Then I looked up and saw two women coming forward, and they were soaring in the wind. They had wings like the wings of a stork. And they lifted up the container between the earth and heaven.  So I asked the angel who was speaking with me: “Where are they taking the ephah container?” He replied: “To the land of Shinar to build her a house; and when it is prepared, she will be deposited there in her proper place.” Zechariah 5:5-11

The wings of a stork

The prophet’s attention is attracted up to the sky. “Look up, please,” this is the same expression God uses when he wants to attract Abraham’s attention to the sky.  Anyway, there’s a container with a round lid that is going out. Then the container is given a pair of wings, the wings of a stork, and brought to the land of Shinar, the seat of Babylon, the cradle of astronomy, astrology and all religious deceiving. It’s somewhat a representation of the many changing the cosmic configuration of the earth has undergone in the course of time.  On earth changing is a constant: political, religious, philosophic or scientific.

Multiples of 111

There are many details in the description really noteworthy, for instance, the measures of the scroll and of the container, they all are multiples of 111. The flying scroll measures (444×888) cm while the epha container has a capacity of 22 liters.

An order to measure the earth

So, the two witnesses of Revelation get involved in the measuring of the earth and the earth, of course, is not a globe… Cf. A cosmic representation of the earth and sky by earthmeasured.com

They received the order and they have to achieve it. “And a reed like a rod was given to me as he said: “Get up and measure the temple sanctuary of God and the altar and those worshipping in it”. Rev 11:1

All the nations gathered against Jerusalem

In the book of Zechariah, stones are nearly a leitmotif.   Chapter 12:3 reads as follows: “Here I am making Jerusalem a cup that causes all the surrounding peoples to stagger, and there will be a siege against Judah as well as against Jerusalem. In that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone to all the peoples. All those who lift it are sure to be severely injured. All the nations of the earth will be gathered against her.”

Nations annihilated

All the congregations of all the nations are against God’s plan to re-edit the earth true, biblical description.  Which will be their result? They will certainly fail. “And in that day I will be certain to annihilate all the nations that come against Jerusalem. See the stone that I have set before Joshua! On the one stone are seven eyes. I am engraving an inscription on it,’ declares Jehovah of armies. I will take away the guilt of that land in one day.’” Appropriately the name of Zechariah means: Jah Has Remembered. The final result will be that “Jerusalem will certainly be called the city of trueness.” Zec 8:3
